Founded in 400 AD (reconstructed in 1456 AD), St. Mary’s Forane Church in Kaduthuruthy, popularly known as Kaduthuruthy Valiyapally, is one of the most historic Knanaya Syrian Catholic churches in Kerala. Serving historically as the seat of the Vadakkankoor kingdom's trade and Christian settlement, the church is a masterpiece of indigenous Syrian-Kerala church architecture.
The church is globally celebrated for its colossal monolithic granite open-air rock cross, standing 50 feet tall on an ornate stone base carved with Persian crosses, elephants, and angels. The interior preserves breathtaking 15th-century wood carvings, a gilded iconostasis, and an ancient wooden ceiling depicting biblical episodes. Elevated as a major Knanaya Forane center, Kaduthuruthy Valiyapally remains a living monument of early Christian history in India.
