The origin of Christian faith in Chalakudy dates back to the time of St. Thomas the Apostle, who landed in Kerala in 52 AD. The early Christian community built their first church here in 600 AD on Palace Road. Around 1300 AD, the church was relocated to its present site. It houses the rare Swayamvara Altar, a papal-bestowed altar known for bestowing special marital blessings. Elevated to a Forane in 1937, it was declared a Marian Pilgrim Centre and features a famous Lourdes-style Grotto and a full-scale Holy Land replica.
