Overview

Traced back to 835 AD, St. Mary’s Forane Church in Athirampuzha is one of the largest and oldest Christian pilgrim hubs in central Kerala. Though dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, it is world-renowned as a major shrine of St. Sebastian (Athirampuzha Punnyavan). The church preserves an ancient Portuguese granite altar, historic church bells, and three monumental stone crosses. The parish's grand January feast is famous for its cultural pageantry, fireworks displays (Vedikkettu), and the ceremonial carriage of arrows (Ambu Nercha).

miraculous statue of St Sebastian

Brought from Portugal in 1687 (traditionally associated with sailor Leonard D'Cruz), this historical statue is the devotional centerpiece of the shrine. Distinctively known as Adiyelpicha Roopam, it depicts Saint Sebastian tied to the pillar before being pierced by arrows, portrayed without arrow wounds. It is brought out for solemn public veneration during the January feast.
