Historical Heritage of St. Mary's Syro-Malabar Church Kanjoor

Built in 1001 AD, St. Mary’s Forane Church in Kanjoor is one of the oldest and most revered pilgrimage shrines under the Syro-Malabar Catholic Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly. Situated along the banks of the Periyar River, the church showcases a striking architectural fusion of traditional Kerala woodwork, Persian design elements, and Portuguese mural art.

The parish holds deep historical associations with local rulers and regional history. During the invasion of Tipu Sultan in the late 18th century, the church grounds were spared destruction after divine intervention linked to the patron saint, an event commemorated in historical frescoes on the church’s monumental Elephant Gate. Sakthan Thampuran, the Maharaja of Cochin, also gifted sacred items—notably a perpetual lamp (Keda Vilakku) and a brass elephant lamp (Aana Vilakku)—after witnessing miraculous events connected to the shrine. Today, Kanjoor Church remains an epicenter of faith attracting pilgrims across religious communities, especially during the annual feast of St. Sebastian.
